Junior Engineers examination comprises of only one written examination followed by an interview.

Basic pattern of examination: The Junior Engineers Examination is held in two phases. In first stage, there is written exam that carries 500 marks. Questions in Engineering subjects will be based on Diploma in Engineering (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical etc).

Paper I includes objective type questions on general Intelligence & Reasoning, general Awareness. In Part A, questions are based on syllabus of General Engineering (Civil & Structural) and in Part B, there are General Engineering (Electrical) questions. Part C consists of general Engineering (Mechanical).

Curriculum for General Intelligence is based on questions of both verbal and non-verbal type under the categories of Analogies, Similarities, Differences, Space visualization, Problem solving, Analysis, Judgement, Decision making, Visual memory, Discrimination, Observation, Relationship concepts, Arithmetical reasoning, Verbal and figure classification and Arithmetical number series. This intends to measure the candidate's capability solve questions with abstract ideas and symbols and their relationships, arithmetical computations and other analytical functions.

Paper II has traditional style questions. Under this head, questions on Part A based on general awareness, General Engineering (Civil & Structural), Part B based on General Engineering (Electrical) and Part C based on General Engineering (Mechanical).

The general awareness questions are designed to test candidate's knowledge of current affairs under the subjects of History, Culture, Geography, Economics, Politics and Scientific Research.

In Electrical engineering field, questions are designed on the sub topics of basic electrical engineering and electrical measurement, electrical machines, I phase and 3 phase transformers, general, transmission and distributions and utilization of electrical energy.

In Mechanical engineering area, questions are based on topics of flow of fluid, thermal engineering, Diesel fuel pump and inductor, production engineering, strength of material, theory of machine.

In Structural engineering, questions are designed on theory of structures, concrete technology, RCC design, and steel design.

In Paper I and Paper II for General Engineering, candidate can choose any one part i.e. Part A or Part B or Part C.

Students can use their own Slide–Rule, Non Programmable Calculator, Logarithm Tables and Steam Table for Paper-II only. These gadgets are not permitted for Paper I.
