Railway Recruitment Rules


Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) is the primary body responsible recruiting working and supervisory staff. Functioning under the Ministry of Railways, Government of India, this central body follows several guidelines.

Know your Eligibility?

Before applying for any post in railways, candidates must ensure that he/she fulfills all the eligibility norms. The candidate should have the requisite Educational/ Technical qualifications from recognized University/Institute. These certificates must be available as per the closing date of submission of the application. Most importantly, candidates those who are waiting for the results of the final examination need not apply.

Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) has the power to reject the applications of candidates at any point of time during the recruitment process, if any candidate is found not fulfilling the required qualification, they would be removed from service, even if they are selected or appointed.

Debarring is strictly practised in Railways, when a candidate is debarred from appearing for a lifetime or a specific period (which is not complete) need not apply for employment in the railways. Since they will be rejected during any stage as and when detected.

Apart from letters for written examinations are sent to candidates by post (Under Certificate of Posting), Railways also intimates through post the candidates whose applications are rejected along with the reason for rejection. Besides, the information of both eligible and ineligible candidates for a particular post is displayed on the website on the Railway Recruitment Board. Such web notifications are done at least one week prior to the written examination. Moreover, RRB will not be responsible for any delays in postal, wrong delivery of call letter and rejection letters. RRB does not intimate candidates who are not selected in written examination or any other test.

Selection by RRB does not confer upon candidates any right of appointment in Railway. The function of the RRB is to recommend names of suitable candidates to the Chief Personnel Officer of the concerned Zonal Railway / Production Unit who in turn issues the offer of appointment letter subject to the availability of vacancies and candidates being found medically fit and satisfying all eligibility criteria.

Training and Security Deposit

Candidates who are selected through examination and interview must undergo training prescribed. Remunerations on initial appointment will be minimum pay of the grade of the post. Allowances will be applicable at the time of appointment. But stipends will be paid in case of the training period. In some cases, the candidate may have to give security deposit and execute an indemnity bond.

Reservation for Ex-servicemen

There are no special reservation for Ex-Servicemen and persons with disability, but they are included in the total number of vacancies. Defence personnel who are likely to be released within one year of the closing date can also apply against Ex-Servicemen vacancies.

The importance of medical fitness

The candidates appointed for the post must pass requisite medical fitness test(s) conducted by the Railway Administration. The purpose of the medical test is to ensure that the candidates are medically fit to carry out the duties and tasks assigned with post. Visual Acuity Standard is one of the important criteria of medical fitness of railway staff. The medical requirements against different medical standards for different categories are outlined below.

A-1 : Physically fit in all respects. Visual Standards —Distance Vision: 6/6, 6/6 without glasses. Near Vision: Sn: 0.6,0.6 without glasses (must clear fogging test) and must pass test for Colour Vision, Binocular Vision, Field of Vision & Night Vision.

A-2 : Physically fit in all respects. Visual Standards—Distance vision: 6/9, 6/9 without glasses. Near Vision: Sn: 0.6, 0.6 without glasses and must pass test for Colour Vision, Binocular Vision, Field of Vision & Night Vision.

A-3 Physically fit in all respects. Visual Standards—Distance Vision: 6/9,6/9 with or without glasses (power of lenses not to exceed 2D). Near Vision: Sn: 0.6, 0.6 with or without glasses and must pass test for Colour Vision, Binocular Vision, Field of Vision & Night Vision.

B-1 Physically fit in all respects. Visual Standards — Distance Vision: 6/9,6/12 with or without glasses (power of lenses not to exceed 4D). Near Vision: Sn: 0.6, 0.6 with or without glasses when reading or close work is required and must pass test for Colour Vision, Binocular Vision, Field of Vision & Night Vision.

B-2 Physically fit in all respects. Visual Standards — Distance Vision: 6/9,6/12 with or without glasses (power not to exceed 4D). Near Vision: Sn: 0.6, 0.6 with or without glasses when reading or close work is required and must pass test for Field of Vision.

C-1 Physically fit in all respects. Visual Standards — Distance Vision: 6/12, 6/18 with or without glasses. Near Vision: Sn: 0.6, 0.6 with or without glasses when reading or close work is required.

C-2 Physically fit in all respects. Visual Standards — Distance Vision: 6/12, Nil with or without glasses. Near Vision, Sn: 0.6 combined with or without glasses when reading or close work is required
