Advice to Schools by CBSE

To de-stress the process of education and make learning an enjoyable experience, the Central Board of Secondary Education has been taking several initiatives for the school going children. Some of the initiatives taken by the CBSE in this regard are:

Advising schools?

  • To keep the textbooks of the students in the school itself so that the students do not carry the bag load.
  • To stop giving homework to the students for Classes II & I.
  • To offer alternatives to homework to the students of classes III to V, which will enhance their emotional edifice and improve the quality of communication and relationships.
  • To do away with the pass-fail system from classes I - V.
  • Adopt Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation in classes I to V, which will assess the holistic performance of the learners over the entire duration of the learning process.
  • Give a five-point scale of grading to students in the primary classes instead of marks.
  • Avoid giving any negative comments/observations in the report cards being given to the students.
  • Provide classroom libraries to facilitate the students in the event of non-possession of textual materials.
  • To give greater thrust to music, dance, painting and other fine arts as a part of their curricular process.
All these initiatives have been communicated to the schools with the advice that the schools may provide necessary opportunities to contextually learning to make it relevant, meaningful and enjoyable. The Board is also examining the possibilities of the following interventions:
  • Provision of additional time before the start of the public examinations.
  • The feasibility of different levels of question paper.
  • Provision for greater flexibility in the selection of subjects at the secondary and senior school levels.
  • Design of questions, which will examine the creative thinking and ability of application of students instead of rote learning.
  • Permitting use of calculators at the Senior School level.
  • Introduction of grading system.
  • Elimination of pass-fail system.
  • Possibilities of subject-wise certification.

The Board will be pleased to receive suggestions from all stakeholders, principals, teachers, students, parents and public from all walks of life, which will help in designing policies and strategies to make learning joyful and empower the learners as creative and contributive citizens of the country.
