Difference between SBI PO and IBPS PO


Probationary Officer plays a vital role in the banking sector. As the job profile includes various tasks like business development, accounting, marketing, loan, etc they hold the important role in the Bank. With such responsibilities, candidates completing the training will be posted as Assistant Manager.

Every year, thousands of Probationary officer are recruited by The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) the nodal agency for recruitment for 23 PSU banks. But, there is a slight difference between Probationary Officer for State Bank of India and IBPS.

Since, SBI is the largest bank in the country, thousands of aspirants write SBI Probationary Exam making it the largest of all banking exams. IBPS PO exam comes second. Despite the fact, vacancies are less when compared to IBPS. When it comes to work pattern and responsibilities are same for Probationary Officers, but the salary and exam patterns are different.


In terms of salary, most of the Probationary Officers are offered the same. But a Probationary Officer in SBI are paid 4 extra increments when he/she joins. Besides, the new officers receive Dearness Allowance which is more than other Probationary Officers. When it comes to perks, SBI offers more perks than all nationalised Banks. Besides, SBI gives 100 per cent Medical Aid for Probationary officer and 75 per cent for his/her family. When one calculates the financial benefits, SBI offers at least Rs 6,000 more than other banks.

Let's move to exam pattern, there is a big difference between SBI and IBPS. Though, first phase of recruitment which is the preliminary is the same, subjects of Mains are different. Mains Exam is conducted in two sections - Objective and Descriptive. But IBPS contains only an Objective Test.

SBI Objective Test contains, General Awareness, Marketing & Computer, Data Analysis and Interpretation and Reasoning. Each carries 50 marks. Descriptive Test contains Essay Writing and Letter Writing. IBPS Objective Test contains English, Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning, General Awareness and Computer.
