How to handle aptitude tests?


Whatever career you choose, there is going to an entrance exam. Whether it’s corporate company or medium scale company with 100 employees, aptitude skills are the common method employed for testing the skills of the candidate. It is said that more than 60 per cent of the top recruitment companies use aptitude tests as a part of recruitment procedure. But the common problem faced the majority of the students and a job aspirant is that they don’t know where to start and how to approach. Since, there are different categories of aptitude tests which are created to test different abilities such as numerical reasoning, abstract thinking and verbal reasoning.

Candidates who perform very well on numerical tests might easily fail the verbal test. In fact, talented people might get 100 marks in one type, while they may get very low score in another.

Numerical reasoning test is the most common aptitude test employed. It assesses how well the candidate can interpret and manipulate mathematical data. They also give the company management an insight into the candidate’s overall intelligence, judgement and business acumen. It is usually multiple-choice and timed, and includes interpreting data from tables, graphs and charts, percentages and proportions, fractions, ratios, estimations, critical reasoning and inflation. Even though numerical reasoning tests can be challenging, they still use only six basic maths skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages and ratios. However, you will need to analyse and interpret more advanced data, and tackle questions that have several steps.

What is an Abstract Reasoning Test? It is form of aptitude test, which aims to test the candidate’s thinking about the rules, patterns for problem solving and decision making. Factors here include the size, location, color, angles and movement. Deducing the difference between them, is the only way to find the solutions. Verbal reasoning tests reveal how well the candidate can analyse written information. The test contains a short passage of text followed by true, false and cannot say questions or sometimes contain the fill in the blank pattern. Since the tests are designed to assess the ability to read and think constructively, candidates must read each passage as many times to make sure they understand what’s being said – and not being said – before answering the question. Besides, it is also important to read the instruction thoroughly and answer them.
