Group C - Technical Cadre Examination


Group C officers and cadres under the Technical category are recruited through 18 Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) spread across the country. Each Railway Recruitment Board caters to the recruitment needs of the specified divisions on the Railways. Despite their jurisdiction, there is no regional or linguistic requirement for recruitment to any post as far as eligibility of the candidates is concerned. Any citizens of India fulfilling the recruitment criteria can apply any post.

Selection Process

The examinations are designed according to the standards required for the post. Besides, no interviews are conducted in many cases. There will be variations in exam pattern depending upon job profiles. For some categories, written test may be followed by an Oral test (Viva) and for others a skill test or psychological test may also be conducted as required by the job profile. All questions are multiple-choice objective type. Selection committee is authorised to conduct more than one written test may be conducted (Preliminary and mains exam) if the number of applicants is large. After selection, successful applicants are called for counselling and scrutiny of original documents for verification and a panel of names is then recommended to zonal railway / production unit, depending on the number of vacancies. The candidates will be required to pass a medical examination before appointment.

Job and Age Limit

Group C posts include Assistant Driver (Electrical / Diesel), Data Entry Operators, Skilled Fitters, Apprentice Fireman 'A', Apprentice Wireless or Telecom Maintainer, Health Inspector Grade IV, Axle Unit Operators, Wheel Unit Operators, Electrical Signal Maintainer, Health Trainers, Health Inspectors. These jobs have been given a prescribed age limit of 18- 30 years.

Apprentice Mechanic (Mechanical/Electrical Diesel), Apprentice Signal Inspector, Apprentice Permanent Way Inspector, Depot Store Keeper, Raj Bhasha Sahayak , Apprentice Inspector of Works, Trainee Junior Draftsman (Electrical), Apprentice Permanent Way, Apprentice Train Examiner Grade 3, Apprentice. Jr. Engineer (Telecommunication/Works). These jobs have been given a prescribed age limit of 18- 33 years.

For the jobs like Apprentice Assistant Charge man (Electronics/Mechanical), Apprentice Senior Draftsman (Electronics/ Mechanical) age limit is prescribed is 18-32 years.

Job profiles like Assistant Programmer, Diesel Forman (Mechanical/ Electrical), Law Assistant, Pharmacist, Trainee Charge man ‘B’ (Electrical/Electronics) demand age limit of 20-32 years. But relaxation is given for Staff nurse (20-40 years) and Teachers Grade I-IV (below 45 years). As per reservation policy, age relaxation is given for SC/ST candidates (5 years), OBC candidates (3 years) and PWD candidates (10 years).
