What is CAT?
The CAT (Common Admission Test) conducted by the IIMs is a very competitive test conducted for admission to the around 1200 graduate programs in management at the six campuses, and is usually considered one of the most competitive exams in the world, with a success rate of less than one in a hundred.

Why CAT Exam?
Today, an MBA degree is looked at by many as a passport to a good career. MBA is highly challenging and extremely rewarding. CAT is the entrance exam for MBA conducted by the IIMs. In recent years, many other institutes in the country also accept the CAT as their qualifying test. It is one of the toughest entrance tests in the world.

How to prepare for CAT?
The structure of the CAT is not certain. In general one has to go through a selection process that includes

  • Written Test and
  • Group Discussion/Interview, etc

This exam is mainly concentrated on two subjects English and Mathematics that is sub-divided into

  • Quantitative Ability,
  • Data Interpretation,
  • Data Sufficiency,
  • Logical Reasoning,
  • Reading Comprehension,
  • Verbal Reasoning And
  • Verbal Ability
The CAT test consists of questions divided into 3-4 sections. About 75 to 150 objective type questions can be expectedand. Each question has a question statement followed by four alternate answer choices and the candidate has to choose the best answer for each of the questions and mark it on a special Optical Reader answer sheet. Even as the number of questions may vary so also do marks of each question. There can be a combination of 0.5 marks, 1 mark and 2 marks questions. The duration of the test is of 120 minutes, Which means each question needs to be answered in seconds and not minutes. Most students are unable to attempt all questions, therefore the important thing is to attempt as many right answers as possible and not try completing even difficult questions. This is so because not only of shortage of time but also negative marking. While each correct answer carries 0.5 or 1 or 2 positive mark, each incorrect question carries 1/3rd of the marks allocated to it as negative marks. Smart Selection and Acuuracy is the key to the Cat or Common Admission Test.

What is the method of evaluation of CAT exams?
The CAT being an aptitude test grades students on different parameters. The scores are presented in Percentage score (%score) and Percentile.

Percentage (%)score: The % score represents normalized percentage of scores secured by the candidate. It is a relative method of representing the score. This is not the actual % score.

Percentile: Percentile indicates student's relative performance position among the total students who took the CAT. For example 96.7 percentile means that the student is among the top 3.3 percent of the population who took the CAT.

Will CAT be conducted on a website?
No. CAT is a computer-based test. The candidate does not take the test on any website. The candidate will read the questions on a computer and choose an answer by clicking on the correct option. The candidate will need to go through the 105 designated test venues in 32 cities across India to take up the exam.

Will the test be held in one go?
No. The exam will be conducted over 10 days. There will be two sessions each day namely Session 1(FN) and Session 2(AN). Candidates can opt for any one of the sessions. There will be 20 sets of question papers.

Will the exam day make any difference?
No. The difficulty level of the exam will be the same across all days. Initial registration data shows a clamor for weekends that could simply be due to working executives opting for those days.

Will the pattern of exam change?
No. The format of the test will remains same except that the candidate will read a question on a computer and click on the correct answer. A CAT sample test is available on the website www.catiim.in for candidates to get a feel of the new method. The computer-based test is an improvement on the answersheet. It allows you to mark questions you are unsure about so that you can selectively review them later. Only one question will appear on the screen at a time and there will be separate buttons that will take you to the Previous or Next question and allow you to Mark or Review a question.

What if the computer develops any glitches?
There are provisions for PC terminal hiccups. The clock on the terminal of each candidate will be tracked. The moment a glitch happens, the clock will stop. The proctor at the examination centre will assess the situation. Once the malfunction is sorted out, the candidate will be able to start from where he stopped.

How will I be assessed? What about results?
Irrespective of slots, scores will be taken together and there will be one result. Instant results are not provided. While the exam is conducted across 20 sessions, the results for CAT 2009 will be declared on the website www.catiim.in.

If Anything could go wrong during Computer based test?
There is a mechanism to take care of every foreseeable problem. There could be imponderables, but it should be a cinch for the candidates.
