What to do after 12th Standard?


With almost all the 12th Standard Examination results (all boards) are declared throughout the country, students are keen to look forward to their future, since 12th Standard is the last stage of a school and a student has to decide his/her career in the future. But this step has to be taken after lots of thinking and planning. They just can’t afford to decide what to do after 12th standard without planning. They must take into consideration various factors like- interest, passion, scope for growth and opportunities, while deciding on their career.


If you have just finished the 12th Standard Examination, you have a number of options in your hand before joining the college or course.

Follow your stream and opt for higher education


If you have taken Science with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) you can opt for Engineering, Architecture, IT (Information Technology), Aviation, Marine, Mining, Computer Science or choose a degree in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. If you have a Science with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB) you can choose for MBBS, Dentistry, Ayurveda and Veterinary Science. Apart from this, there are lots of other options like Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. One can also choose pure sciences like botany, zoology, and research in biological sciences.

If you have taken Commerce in 12th Standard, you can move to B Com, BBA, B Com, Economics, Business Economics, and Banking Management. If you have chosen Commerce with Computer Science, you can choose Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Application. If you have taken humanities you can go for BA in your chosen subject.

Be Prepared for Entrance Exams

If you are choosing professions like Gov. jobs (SSC), Civil Service, Engineering, Medicine, Banking you might have to sit for entrance exams after 12th Standard. Many reputed colleges, management colleges like IIM, IIT and deemed universities often take students through entrance exams. The main reason is that the number of applicants is generally large. Even if you are choosing careers in armed forces, you must sit for NDA exams. Students must plan ahead for these entrance exams as these exams are held at various periods in a year. While some entrance exams are also available in online format for engineering many others in online and offline mode. Moreover, plenty of coaching institutions offer coaching on those subjects.

Other options

Other than engineering, medicine, there are many like Law, Filmmaking, Hotel Management, E-Commerce, Aviation, Multimedia, Nursing, Pharmacy, Jewellery, Human Resource Management, Tourism, Yoga, Fashion, Art (Painting and Sculpture) Mass communication and Journalism etc which one can opt for to make a successful career. Most of these offer excellent career opportunities. But the student must choose the course which matches best with their strengths.
